Know Before you Go: Visiting Egypt For the First Time
Best Time to Visit Egypt
Anytime between October and April is the best time to visit Egypt. Summers can get extremely hot—think highs of 122°F (50°C)—which can be dangerous, especially since most of Egypt’s top attractions are outdoors.
December offers some of the most comfortable weather, but keep in mind it’s also peak season, so expect big crowds.
If I could choose the perfect time to go, it would be September, October, April, or May. The weather is warm but manageable, the crowds are thinner, and you can enjoy Egypt’s highlights without the extremes of high season or summer heat.
Getting Around Egypt
For long distances, domestic flights are quick and affordable, especially between Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan. If you’re on a budget, the overnight sleeper train is a comfortable option, complete with meals and private cabins.
In cities, Uber and Careem are easy, reliable, and affordable for getting around. For exploring historical sites, I highly recommend private tours. They usually come with an Egyptologist guide, offering expert insights that make your visit even more enriching.
Visa to Enter Egypt
You can get a visa on arrival at the airport for $25 USD, valid for 30 days. There are banks at the airport where you can purchase the visa.
What to wear in Egypt
Egypt is a conservative country, but you can wear your normal clothes as long as they’re not revealing. I personally wear dresses and jeans without any issues. For the heat, opt for lightweight, breathable clothing like cotton or linen, and dress modestly when visiting religious sites. Comfortable shoes are essential for exploring, and don’t forget sun protection, sunglasses, and a light jacket for cooler evenings.
Is Egypt safe?
Absolutely! Egypt is very safe for tourists, and the people are incredibly kind and helpful. As with any destination, just take normal precautions, and you’ll have a wonderful experience.

Great Pyramids of Giza
You’ll likely be flying into Cairo to start your Egyptian adventure. Let’s kick off the 12 day Egypt Itinerary by spending 2 days in this bustling city!
No trip to Egypt is complete without seeing the magnificent Pyramids of Giza. These ancient wonders are truly breathtaking, and you can even go inside one of the pyramids. While there isn’t much inside, it’s a unique and unforgettable experience—be prepared to walk backward down a steep incline to reach the bottom!
I highly recommend booking a guided tour for a hassle-free experience. Having a tour guide with you will not only save you time but also enrich your visit as they explain the fascinating history behind each landmark
Your visit to the Giza Plateau will include a few key stops to fully experience the wonders of this iconic site.
Stop 1: Great Pyramid of Giza
Start with the Great Pyramid of Giza, the most iconic of them all. Take your time to walk around, snap some photos, and soak in the scale of this marvel.
Tour Guide Tip: If you want to experience going inside a pyramid for free, head to the left of the Great Pyramid of Khufu to find the Pyramid of Queen Hetepheres I. This smaller pyramid, believed to be the tomb of Queen Hetepheres, the mother of Khufu, is less visited, offering a peaceful spot to explore without the crowds. Best of all, you can enter without any charge and still enjoy an incredible experience!
Stop 2: Panorama View
Next, head to the Panorama View, the best spot for taking in a full view of all three pyramids. This is the perfect place for photos and a camel ride 🐪. Capture the grandeur of the pyramids in the desert backdrop.
Tip: Be sure to negotiate the price before getting on and clarify that it includes the tip, as they may try to increase the price after taking photos.
Stop 3: Lunch at 9 Pyramids Lounge
After a morning full of exploration, head to @9 Pyramids Lounge for a delicious Egyptian breakfast with an amazing view of the pyramids for only $12. You can choose between oriental and western breakfast with delicious fresh stone baked Egyptian bread
Tip: It’s essential to book a reservation in advance for access to this site; otherwise, you won’t be allowed entry. A bit of a warning: make sure to pre-arrange your transport to and from the location. If you rely on the restaurant’s transportation for your return, be prepared for them to overcharge you, often at double or triple the usual price.
On a positive note, this spot is perfect for capturing those iconic photos without having crowds or people in the backdrop, allowing you to get that perfect shot!
Stop 4: Visit the Sphinx
After your delicious breakfast, head straight to the Sphinx, one of Egypt’s most iconic landmarks. Spend some time exploring, learning about its fascinating history, and of course, taking more photos of this monumental statue.
Tip: Make sure to follow the same stopping schedule as before. Once you exit you won’t be able to return back.
Egyptian Museum in Giza (or Egyptian Museum in Cairo)
In the afternoon, you can head to the new Egyptian Museum in Giza. It’s massive and while it’s not officially open yet, it’s possible to visit and explore the site.
Alternatively, you could visit the iconic Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
The museum is famous for the collection of King Tutankhamun’s treasures. Seeing the golden mask up close is surreal—it’s even more stunning in person than you could ever imagine.
Nile Dinner Cruise
f you’re looking for a memorable way to wrap up your day in Cairo, a Nile Dinner Cruise is an experience you won’t want to miss. As the boat sets sail along the legendary Nile River, the city’s skyline comes alive under the glow of city lights, with the Cairo Tower standing tall and the elegant riverside hotels adding to the breathtaking view.
The cruise lasts two to three hours. A buffet-style meal awaits you, blending traditional Egyptian flavors with international dishes. The evening becomes even more magical with live entertainment—traditional Egyptian music, belly dancing, and Tanoura (whirling dervish) performances.
Day 2 Egypt Itinerary: Old Cairo
Coptic Cairo

Explore the Hanging Church, the Saint Sergius and Bacchus Church, and the Coptic Museum, which showcases the rich Christian heritage of Egypt. There’s also a charming street lined with books. Be sure to learn about the Holy Family’s escape to this area, which adds to the site’s historical importance.
Islamic Cairo
Afterward, head to Islamic Cairo. Visit the Citadel of Salah Eldin, a monumental complex that once served as the center of medieval Cairo. Don’t miss the Muhammad Ali Mosque (also known as the Alabaster Mosque), a stunning Ottoman-era structure built as agiya sofia mosque in Istanbul, Turkey, and located atop the Citadel.
Its grandeur is matched by the breathtaking panoramic views of Cairo, including the cityscape and the Nile River. I highly recommend booking this tour that will take you to islamic Cairo and the Bazaar.
Khan El Khalili Bazaar
Khan El Khalili Bazaar is a must-visit! This lively market is packed with handmade crafts, jewelry, spices, clothing, and all kinds of souvenirs. But it’s more than just shopping—the atmosphere, history, and stunning old architecture make it an experience in itself.
Need a break? There are plenty of cozy cafés where you can sip on tea or coffee and soak up the vibe. One of the most famous is El Fishawy, which has been around for over 200 years!
Another great spot which is my favourite is Om Kalthoum Café, right near one of the most photographed parts of the bazaar.
vendors here love to haggle, so don’t be shy about negotiating! Prices are usually marked up for tourists, and you can often bring them down by a third. Also, be prepared for some persistent sellers, but a polite “no, thanks”will usually do the trick.
Day 3 Cairo – Saqqara, Memphis, and the Step Pyramid (optional day)

Saqqara, located near Cairo, is home to the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the oldest pyramid in Egypt, marking the start of pyramid construction. The site also features ancient tombs and burial sites, offering a glimpse into Egypt’s rich history.

Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt, is a site steeped in history. One of its most impressive features is the colossal statue of Ramses II, which stands as a powerful symbol of Egypt’s ancient might.

Day 4 Egypt Itinerary: Aswan, Philae Temple, Nubian village, Felucca Boat at sunset
Take an early morning flight to Aswan (about 1 hour from Cairo), allowing you to make the most of your day exploring this beautiful city on the Nile.
Visit Philae Temple
Upon arrival in Aswan, head straight to Philae Temple or you can take this tour, one of Egypt’s most breathtaking ancient sites. This island temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis, is only accessible by boat, making the journey there feel even more magical.
Visiting the Temple of Isis was one of the highlights of my trip to Egypt. The fact that you have to arrive by boat, gliding across the Nile to reach this sacred site, adds to its dreamy, almost mystical atmosphere.
However, this temple wasn’t always located here—originally, it stood on Philae Island, but after the construction of the Aswan High Dam, the rising waters of Lake Nasser left it submerged. To preserve its beauty and historical significance, the entire temple complex was carefully relocated to its new home on Agilkia Island in a remarkable UNESCO-led project.
Nubian village
After exploring Philae Temple, it’s time to head to one of the most vibrant and unique places in Egypt—the Nubian Village. I highly recommend staying here overnight for a truly immersive experience.
Located on the West Bank of the Nile, near Aswan, the Nubian Villages are among the most colorful and welcoming in the country. The houses are painted in bright blues, pinks, yellows, and greens, creating a joyful, picture-perfectsetting.
The Nubians originally migrated from Sudan over 8,000 years ago to farm along the Nile River, and their rich culture and traditions remain strong today. They have their own distinct language, which they never teach to outsiders, keeping it exclusive to their community.
Staying overnight allows you to experience traditional Nubian hospitality, enjoy home-cooked meals, and witness authentic local life away from the usual tourist spots.

There’s nothing quite like sailing down the Nile River on a traditional felucca boat. These sailboats might not move quickly, but their slow pace adds to the tranquility and charm of the experience. As you glide along the river, you’ll feel the gentle breeze and the peacefulness that surrounds you.
Day 5 Egypt Itinerary: Abu Simbel, Nile cruise
Abu Simbel Day Trip
Start your day early with a day trip to Abu Simbel, which is about a 3-hour drive one way from Aswan. Trust me, this experience is absolutely worth it—the temples are beyond impressive and one of Egypt’s most iconic landmarks
Abu Simbel is one of the most impressive and breathtaking sites in Egypt, and definitely one of my favorite temples. The sheer size of the temples is overwhelming, especially when you realise that both temples were carved out of a single piece of stone.
At Abu Simbel, you get to visit two temples in one spot. The larger temple is dedicated to King Ramses II, and the smaller one is devoted to his Nubian wife Nefertari. The statues of Ramses at the entrance are giant—standing about 66 feet tall—and they truly leave you in awe.
Tip: The site tends to be packed with tourists from 8 to 10 am, but that’s actually the best time to visit to avoid the extreme heat that hits later in the day. If you can handle the midday sun, after 10 am, the crowds begin to thin out as the tour buses leave, giving you the chance to explore and take photos without anyone else in the frame.
Nile Cruise
After visiting Abu Simbel, Return to Aswan and check in Nile cruise, I took the Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor (typically a 4 day, 3 night cruise).
Where to Stay in Aswan
4-Day 3-Night Nile Cruise from Aswan to Luxor I highly recommend booking a Nile cruise instead of hotels that will take you to all the sights in Luxor and Aswan. Your meals and Egyptologist guide are also included plus transportation, trust me it’s a lifetime experience.
Hotel in Aswan: Sofitel Legend Old Cataract: Stunning old hotel in great location on the nile and history that fulfills your Egypt fantasies
Hotel in the colourful Nubian Village: Kato Waidi Nubian Resort: I highly recommend staying here for one night before your cruise, I stayed in this hotel and felt so welcomed by the Nubian people, they cooked me special Egyptian food and ate it with a view of the Nile, the hotel also is few walking steps away to the local market.
Enjoy relaxing evening onboard with dinner and entertainment.
Day 6 Egypt Itinerary: Edfu Temple & Kom Ombo Temples
Nile Cruise sailing from Aswan towards – Edfu Temple & Kom Ombo. First stop for the cruise in the morning is Edfu Temple.
Edfu Temple
Edfu Temple is one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt and a must-visit for anyone fascinated by ancient history. Dedicated to the falcon God Horus, this temple is massive, with towering walls covered in intricate carvings that tell the story of good triumphing over evil.
The columns in the hypostyle hall are beautifully decorated, and the hieroglyphics look as if they were carved just yesterday. The inner sanctum, where the sacred statue of Horus once stood, has an almost mystical feel to it.
Kom Ombo Temple
Then head back to the cruise—the cruise will sail to the next stop, Kom Ombo Temple. This is one of the most unique temples in Egypt, standing right on the banks of the Nile River. What makes it special is that it’s a double temple, dedicated to two gods—Horus the Elder and Sobek, the crocodile god. This rare dual design means everything is perfectly symmetrical, with two entrances, two halls, and two sanctuaries.
One of the highlights here is the Crocodile Museum, where you can see mummified crocodiles that were once worshipped as sacred animals.
Return back to the cruise and enjoy another relaxing evening onboard with dinner and entertainment.
Day 7 Egypt Itinerary: Valley of the Kings, Luxor Temple
Valley of the Kings
Begin your 7th day with visiting the west Bank of Luxor with a visit to the Valley of the Kings, the legendary burial ground of Egypt’s greatest pharaohs. You’ll see stunningly decorated tombs, with walls covered in vivid hieroglyphics that have survived for thousands of years.
A must-visit is Tutankhamun’s tomb, where you can see the young pharaoh’s mummy resting in its original burial place.
Next, head to the Temple of Hatshepsut, an architectural masterpiece built into the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari. This temple, dedicated to Egypt’s first female pharaoh, stands out with its terraced design and towering columns. The reliefs inside tell the story of her reign and divine birth, making this one of the most fascinating sites in Luxor.
Before leaving the West Bank, stop by the Colossi of Memnon—two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III that have stood guard for over 3,000 years. They are all that remain of a once-magnificent temple and are an impressive sight to behold.
Luxor Temple
After some rest, visit Luxor Temple, which looks absolutely magical when lit up at night. The temple have massive statues of Ramses II. The temple’s colonnades, obelisks, and intricate carvings create an otherworldly atmosphere, making it one of the best places to visit after sunset.
Then, head back to the cruise and unwind with a peaceful Nile River sunset cruise, watching the golden hues reflect off the water—the perfect way to end your day in Luxor.
Day 8 Egypt Itinerary: Hot Air Balloon, Karnak Temple

Your final day in Luxor is all about experiencing breathtaking views and ancient wonders.
Start the day with a hot air balloon ride, one of the most unforgettable experiences in Egypt. Floating high above Luxor at sunrise, you’ll get a breathtaking aerial view of the Valley of the Kings, the Nile River, and the vast desert landscapes.
Watching the first rays of sunlight illuminate the temples and tombs below is a truly magical sight. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience this famous part of history from the sky!
Karnak Temple
Now it’s time to visit Karnak Temple, the largest religious complex in the world. This massive site is filled with towering columns, colossal statues, and beautifully preserved hieroglyphics. Icouldn’t help but feel tiny and awe-struck by the scale and beauty around me.
The highlight is the Great Hypostyle Hall, with 134 massive columns .You’ll also see ancient obelisks, sacred lakes, and hidden chapels, all telling the story of Egypt’s powerful pharaohs and their devotion to the gods.
This breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage site is undeniably one of the top must-visit attractions in Luxor.
Day 9 Egypt Itinerary: Hurghada
Take a flight from Luxor to Hurghada (about 1 hour). Arrive and check into your beach resort. Enjoy your first afternoon in Hurghada relaxing on the beaches of the Red Sea. It’s time to have some relaxing time after all the visits you did in Luxor and Aswan.
Day 10 Egypt Itinerary: Orange Bay Day Tour

Now it’s time for some fun and snorkelling at Orange Bay, a stunning island near Hurghada, Egypt. To get there, we were taken by boat, cruising through the crystal-clear waters. Along the way, we made a few snorkeling stops, each one more incredible than the last.
The underwater world was breathtaking, with vibrant coral reefs and schools of colorful fish. After exploring the reefs, we finally arrived at Orange Bay, where we enjoyed some free time to relax, swim in the turquoise waters, and take in the beauty of the island.
A delicious lunch was also included, served on the boat, giving us a chance to refuel before continuing to explore. I highly recommend this tour—it’s the perfect combination of adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty, topped off with a great meal and unforgettable memories!
Day 11, 12 Egypt Itinerary: Hurghada
