1- Getting Ready For Our Cinque Terre Day Trip From Florence

I walked from my hotel in Florence to the tour meeting point.  Our guide was standing there holding a sign, and after showing my booking confirmation on my phone, we were ready to start the day.

The drive from Florence to Cinque Terre took around 2 hours, and the journey itself was really beautiful. Along the way, we passed through parts of the Tuscan countryside with lovely rolling hills and small villages. 

Our guide, Noami, was also explaining what we were seeing during the drive, which made the trip feel much more interesting rather than just a long bus ride.

2. Arriving in La Spezia & Train Access

The bus stopped at  La Spezia, the gateway to Cinque Terre.

Here, our guide organised the Cinque Terre train card, which gives access to all five villages.

From here, we used the train that connects all villages . It only takes about five minutes to travel from one village to the next.

Our guide, Naomi, gave us free time in each village so we could explore independently at our own pace. Before leaving each stop, she would clearly explain the meeting point and meeting time for the group.

3- Manarola (First Stop)

Our first stop on our Florence to Cinque Terre day tour was Manarola.

 I immediately fell in love with this beautiful little coastal village, the views here are surreal!

As soon as I arrived, I made my way straight to one of the most beautiful viewpoints. 

If you want to do the same, simply walk along the main street towards the promenade and follow the signs to Nessun Dorma or the Manarola viewpoint. I just used Google Maps and it was really easy to find without any hiking or complicated route.

This spot gives you one of the most iconic views of Manarola without needing to do a difficult hike and it is also not crowded.

4- Corniglia

After soaking in the views of Manarola, we then moved on to the second village, Corniglia.

Here, our guides organised an optional lunch for an extra fee of around €20.

I actually enjoyed the lunch, which included some appetisers and pesto pasta.

It was my first time knowing that Cinque Terre is famous for pesto pasta. It’s one of the signature dishes of the Liguria region thanks to the fresh basil grown here.

I was also glad to have a break, relax a bit, and chat with others in the group before continuing the rest of the day.

Of course, you can absolutely skip it if you prefer to explore independently, but I highly recommend!

Sally’s Tip: Bring some cash with you, as our guide only accepted cash payments for the lunch booking.

After lunch, the guide asked anyone interested in joining the optional hike from Corniglia to Vernazza to follow her, while the rest of the group could continue to Vernazza by train.

I personally chose to take the train because I really wanted to spend more time exploring Vernazza at my own pace.

5- Vernazza

Next up on our trip from Florence to Cinque Terre was the beautiful fishing village of Vernazza, which is one of the most stunning villages in Cinque Terre and incredibly photogenic.

Since we had some extra free time in Vernazza, I decided to do a small hike to see the village from above — and yes, even more beautiful views and of course more photos!

To reach this viewpoint, you’ll need to start the hiking trail from Vernazza towards Monterosso al Mare. It takes around 15 minutes to reach the panoramic spot overlooking the village.

The views are absolutely worth it, but I’ll be honest — the hike can feel a bit tiring, especially during a long day trip when your time and energy are limited.

If you don’t feel like hiking but still want beautiful photos of Vernazza, don’t worry, I’ve got you.

Instead of taking the trail uphill, just walk towards the bay and harbour area. As soon as you arrive, you’ll see colourful fishing boats sitting in the port surrounded by pastel-coloured houses.

And after taking all those photos, it was finally time for one of the best parts of any Italy trip — gelato.

I stopped by Gelateria Vernazza for a gelato.

6- Monterosso al Mare

Our next stop was Monterosso al Mare, which is known for having the largest beach in all of Cinque Terre.

Unlike some of the other villages, Monterosso has a long sandy beach with sparkling turquoise water.

We had some free time here, so of course I couldn’t resist taking a dip in the sea. 

7- Boat from Monterosso al Mare to Riomaggiore

And then came one of my favourite parts of the entire tour…

Instead of taking the train again, we boarded a scenic boat ride from Monterosso al Mare towards Riomaggiore.

If you know me, you know I like boat tours , so I really enjoyed this part. Seeing the colourful villages of Cinque Terre from the water gave a different perspective compared to being on land.

After the boat ride, our guide also took us to try the famous seafood cones along the way, which is a popular local snack in Cinque Terre.

8- Ride Back to Florence

My heart honestly felt so full after such an incredible day exploring Cinque Terre. 

After getting picked up again from La Spezia, it was finally time to board the bus and head back to Florence.

This trip gives a great introduction to Cinque Terre, but it also made me realise I’d love to come back and spend a few days here properly.

Yes, it’s a long day (12–13 hours), but for everything you see and experience, it’s absolutely worth it.

• Comfortable walking shoes (there’s a lot of walking, stairs, and uneven paths)

Toilets are available in most villages, but they’re usually paid (around €1–€2). You’ll find them near train stations and main tourist areas, but they’re not everywhere, so it’s worth using them whenever you get the chance during stops.

Another easy option is to use the toilet at a café or restaurant if you’re buying something.

Pharmacies

Each main village has a small pharmacy, but opening hours can be limited, especially in smaller villages or outside peak hours. It’s best to bring any basics with you from Florence so you’re not searching during the day — things like pain relief, plasters, or motion sickness tablets just in case.

ATMs & Cash

ATMs are available in some villages, but not always right where you are exploring. It’s a good idea to carry some cash for small purchases like toilets, snacks, gelato, or drinks, as not every place accepts cards for small amounts.

WiFi & Signal

Mobile signal is generally fine in most villages, but it can drop in some coastal areas and while moving between stops. I personally use an Airalo eSIM, and I also download Google Maps offline just in case

The most common DIY option is to take a train from Florence to La Spezia, then switch onto the local Cinque Terre train line, which connects all five villages.

Another option is to drive to La Spezia, park there, and continue by train into the villages from the coast.

If you want a more comfortable and seamless experience, you can also hire a private driver, which gives you full control over timing and stops throughout the day. That being said, this is usually the most expensive option.
